Darning Method Using a Darning Sewing Machine.
(2)
Hand darning. When repair of a hole or tear is made by hand darning, the darn should match the original
weave of the damaged material as close as possible. Hand darning will be performed as follows:
(a)
Using an authorized marking aid of contrasting color, mark a square around the damaged area and
ensure that the marking is at least 1/4 in. back from each edge of the damaged area. The marking will
be made with the warp and the filling of the material.
(b)
Using a darning needle and a length of suitable type thread, begin darning at one comer of the marked
area. Working in the direction of the fabric warp or filling, pass the needle and thread back and forth
through the material until the opposite diagonal corner of the marked area is reached (A, fig. 3-17).
